Many of the companies offering the opportunity to do online surveys choose to pay by cash or by cheque, or possibly by PayPal and give their participants the chance to spend that money directly wherever they wish. There is another way of paying out, however, and this is quite popular with many people for the simplicity of the medium. This is the voucher system that allows people to fill in a specific survey and earn a voucher for a specific product. This is not a new way of rewarding people for doing surveys – but for many people it is a perfectly beneficial way to do things.

Many of us will happily complete a survey by a company which offers us a voucher for their product in return. This is the most straightforward way of marketing by incentive, but does of course have its limitations. Doing a survey that pays by voucher is all well and good if you already like that company’s products – but what if you want to have more freedom of choice? And what does a company learn by, essentially, marketing to existing customers? Nonetheless, it remains a popular system.

After all, it never hurts a company to know who and where its loyal customers are. From this they can paint a demographic picture and can hone their marketing to attract more people like those who will enjoy their product too. For the customer it feels that their loyalty is appreciated and has been rewarded – and this is never a bad thing.

Sitting a survey and being paid for it is a relatively new idea in the mass market, although it is true to say that people have been paid for giving their consumer opinion in one form or another for some time now. Making it an actual job is something that is less common, and will take a great deal of commitment to something which, after all, still entails simply sitting clicking buttons. Is it really possible to fill in surveys for a living?

It would be incorrect to say that you could have a comfortable living just from sitting in front of a computer doing surveys for even eight hours a day. There is a limit to the number of surveys on the internet which pay in this way anyway. What you can do is make significant extra income by diligently participating in as many surveys as you can, and qualifying to take premium surveys by doing so. With an additional income, you can make your existing income from daily work look a lot more healthy. If you can set aside the time to do a lot of surveys in your spare time, then you can have a quite impressive side income.

Some survey sites allow you to accumulate money which will be totalled up until it gets to a certain point, at which they will issue you the money as a bank payment and increase your bank balance. If you do this regularly enough, you can soon accumulate enough money to spend on something you have wanted for a long time, but have never been able to justify spending your wages on.

The system of filling in online surveys in return for money is one that has increased in terms of popularity and sophistication over the last few years. Once upon a time it was a simple process of:

 1. Fill in the survey
2. Receive a voucher by post or e-mail.

And that was it. Naturally this did not attract a mass market, as vouchers have their own problems. Generally, these vouchers did not cover the full price of large-value products, so you would have to spend a significant amount to turn them into anything tangible.

The online survey has developed as a result, to bring in more people, and the most important upshot has been to give consumers a chance to earn actual money that they could use anywhere. The kind of person who will fill in a survey to win a voucher for a crate of a specific beer is the kind of person who already likes that beer. The company learns little from their feedback, except knowing where their existing customers are. They want to know more about where they can create new customers.

To find this out, they will pose surveys which ask questions that will gain more specific answers. This information is more valuable to them, and they will pay for it – this money then goes to the survey hosting site who will, eventually, pass it on to the survey participants. One survey will not pay that much, so typically the money is paid by cheque, after a significant amount has been accumulated by the participant.
